If getting your teenager
to school involves tears, attitude and highly advanced negotiation methods then
you’re not alone. On any given day, many students are digging in their heels,
so what is behind this behaviour and what you can do about it.
Bullying
Thousands of students
miss school every day because they’re being bullied. A lot of teens never
report their abuse, so there’s a chance that they might be a victim without you
even knowing. An early intervention is one of the best ways to put an end to
bullying and improve educational outcomes for your teen. If you discover your
child is being bullied, you can put some strategies in place to resolve the
situation:
- Speak to teachers and the principal so they
can discipline the bully.
- Talk to your teen regularly about the
situation at school.
- Build them up and make sure to praise them
whenever you can. Being bullied on a regular basis can cause depression.
Boredom
It is difficult to get
students to school if they don’t feel stimulated when they get there. Boredom
can be a huge problem for many students, from gifted teens to reluctant
learners. School can be boring at times, especially when your teen is studying
a topic they are not interested in, but there are ways you can solve this
problem:
- Speak to their teacher about creating more
enriched assignments or lessons.
- Encourage them to join a school club or
activity that will make school more fun.
- Make home a more boring alternative by taking
away games and TV privileges if your teen refuses to go to school.
Struggling with Lessons
Students who feel
self-conscious about their academic abilities may also try every tactic there
is to get out of going to school. This could be a problem if your teen has
learning disabilities. But, there are ways to combat this problem:
- Speak to teachers about the situation and develop
a plan for managing the problem.
- Work with your teen on homework and other
school assignments.
- Hire a tutor so they will get the extra help
they need to catch up or keep pace.
No matter why your
teen is reluctant to go to school, try these tips and maybe your child may be
better suited for a tutor centre, like The Assisted Learning Centre in Fish
Hoek.
