When it comes to teenage friendships, drama
is never far away.
A lot of teenagers have friendships that
may seem a bit toxic, and a relationship like this could be potentially dangerous
to a teenager.
The term “Frenemies” is one you must have heard
before – a toxic friendship that can cause a teen to become sad and even
anxious. Here’s how you can spot if your teen has a frenemy…
> Random exclusions. One day they’re
best buddies, promising that they’ll be friends forever and the next day they’ll
be a social event that your teen is purposely not invited to.
> Backhanded compliments. One of the
specialities of the frenemy is the backhanded compliment. This is when a compliment
is used to convey something negative.
> Rumours or gossip. A frenemy will go
behind your teenagers back and spread untrue or nasty stories. Otherwise they
will reveal secrets that were shared in confidence to all the wrong people.
> Overly competitive. Often a frenemy
will take on certain tasks and activities for no other reason but to prove they
are better than your teenager.
> Dishonesty. A frenemy will lie on more
than one occasion and they will usually blatantly deny ever telling or coming
up with the untruths.
In a perfect world, teens would work out dilemmas
themselves and there would be no drama. However in the real work, sometimes
teens need some gentle guidance from a parent.
Whatever you do, do not ban your teen from
seeing a frenemy; this will only want to make them spend more time with them.
Have you ever come across the frenemy issue
before? How did you deal with it?
