How to Deal with and Prevent a Rude Teen

Teenagers are known to be rude and lash out, even if there is no reason to be. They often do not think before they say something and this can be embarrassing as a parent who is meant to teach them how to behave appropriately.

When it is time to sit down and have a chat with your teen about their rude behaviour, use these three steps…
  1. Let them know what bothered you about their behaviour – be clear and specific so that it is easy for them to understand.
  2. Ask your teen why they behaved like they did – listen carefully to your teen, they may be frustrated at school or angry with you about something that is unrelated.
  3. Explain that there are consequences to rude behaviour – Always follow through with the consequences unless you came to an agreement when the behaviour first happened.

Here are some helpful tips to prevent rudeness before it occurs…
  • Always make sure you use good manners yourself – if your teen sees you being rude they may think it is okay to behave that way.
  • Ask your teen what behaviour is acceptable instead of being rude – they often have the answers, you just have to ask!
  • Write up a contract in the family that everyone has to follow – be clear about what behaviour is acceptable and what the consequences will be for rude behaviour.
  • Hold a family meeting to discuss rude behaviour and manners in general – this will allow you to praise your teen and let them know you see them making an effort.
  • Make sure that you know your own moods – it’s okay to be firm, but it isn’t okay to be rude to your teen because you’re having a bad day and they haven’t done their chores.

As a parent you need to know how to deal with and prevent your teen’s rude behaviour, especially when the mood swings and growing pains start!
