Where to start with a lazy teenager

Starting things is always the hardest part. It doesn’t matter whether it’s losing weight, a new project, or starting to care about school.

So, what’s the first thing you need to do to get your teenager out of that lazy stage?

Get your teen on board

As you probably know, nagging is not an effective solution for motivating your teen. If you want your teen to do well at school, you’re going to have to get on board with the idea.

Try and sit down and chat with your teenager about regular homework/study time. Remember that this conversation should NOT be a lecture!

Get a weekly routine sorted

This means sitting down with your teen and deciding when they’re going to do homework each day, and how much studying they need to be doing.

Homework is a very important part of academic success; it keeps the brain engaged throughout the year and forces teens to go over what they have learnt at school that day.

How much studying your teen should be doing really depends on them and what stage of the year they are at. When exams are approaching, this is the time that teenagers should start scheduling study time into their weekly routine.

Get outside assistance

This next step is for teens who haven’t been a bit lazy when it comes to school, but who also struggle with the content when they do try.

If your teen feels stuck about their school subjects, you can guarantee the motivation to study will pretty much be non-existent. You can’t expect a teen to slave away over the books if they don’t understand what’s going on.

Depending on their grade or subject, you may be able to help them. If they’re a senior, you may have to look at getting a tutor. Always be aware though, that sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between confusion and laziness.

So, make sure your teen has given the work a decent try before they say they don’t understand.

If you believe that it is the time for your teenager to turn over a new leaf and get the ball rolling, then use these tips to help to get them started.
