Wouldn’t it be nice if
you could just get perfect scores in all of your exams, tests, assignments and
projects? In the short term, this would be great, however long term – it’s not
a good thing! Your overall development as a student will suffer if everything was
easy all the time.
Sound weird? It is
true! Tackling problems is a vital part of exploring what you are really capable
of.
There are two
different types of mindsets: Fixed and Growth. There are many differences
between them, like someone with a fixed mindset believes you are either smart
or not and there’s not a lot you can do about it. But someone with a growth mindset
believes that effort is the path to success, and that challenges are valuable.
Placed side by side,
this is how the two mindsets compare…
Fixed Mindset
(Intelligence is static) Leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to… |
Growth Mindset
(Intelligence can be developed) Leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to… |
…avoid challenges
|
…embrace challenges
|
…give up easily
|
…persist in the face of setbacks
|
…see effort as fruitless or worse
|
…see effort as the path to mastery
|
…ignore useful negative feedback
|
…learn from criticism
|
…feel threatened by the success of others
|
…find lessons and inspiration in the success of others
|
As a result, they may settle
early and achieve less than their full potential.
|
As a result, they reach
ever-higher levels of achievement.
|
All this confirms a
deterministic view of the world.
|
All this gives them a greater
sense of free will.
|
Perfection is an
illusion, something for all students to strive towards, which means that
falling short is probably going to happen. But don’t worry, that’s actually a good
thing!
