At some point in life every child will
complain about school. Sometimes kids are just frustrated, sometimes they’re
just copying their friends and sometimes it could be that these complaints are
a warning sign of trouble to come.
These top 3 complaints about school have
probably been heard a million times before, so here’s how to respond to them
without jumping to conclusions.
Why
do I have to go to school?
This complaint is pretty vague. It could be
coming up because your kid is overwhelmed or stressed out or it could come up
because your child is at that time in their lives where they question everything.
Remember that young children often struggle to see the value of school and what
rewards it will bring later.
How you can respond: Ask
your child if they are experiencing any troubles at school. If they don’t see
the point of school explain to them why it is necessary to learn how to read,
write and gain skills to get somewhere in life.
School
is hard; I don’t want to do it!
This complaint often comes from a child who
does not have the skills to do their work properly. This could also be an early
sign of a learning disability. Often a small frustration could lead to your
child declaring that school is too hard.
How you can respond:
Sit down with your child and ask them what part of school they are struggling
in. They may be having problems in only one small area of their work or with a
project they can’t figure out. Explain to your child that working hard and
learning new things that they may find difficult will expand their knowledge!
I
hate getting up early!
Your child probably really is tired from
getting up early; however they need to know that having an early set bedtime
will help with their sleep deprivation.
How you can respond: Sit
down with your child and decide on a bedtime that will provide them with enough
hours of sleep. Make sure all their electrical devices like their cell phone,
TV and computer are turned off before bed.
Do not panic if your child starts
complaining about school, it is a common occurrence that happens to all
students. The only way to deal with it is to know how to respond correctly!
