School is finally out and students everywhere are thinking to themselves, “What am I going to with all this free time?” Well, the holidays aren’t not just for seeing friends, enjoying time off from your studies and sleeping all day, it is also a great time to get ahead and use the time wisely.
There are plenty of productive things to do during the school holidays…
1. Reflect on the year gone by
Think about how your past year went and what things you can improve on. Make out a sheet of paper and answer a few questions:
> What did I do well in the past year?
> What did I not do so well in the past year?
> What will I do differently in the upcoming year?
2. Get active
If you’ve been swamped with school work and haven’t been able to find time to exercise, this is the perfect time to start. You can test out new exercises that work best with your school schedule or even start a new sport.
3. Pick up a new hobby
When school, extracurriculars, team sports and homework take over your weekdays and weekends, it can hard to fit in a hobby. Use the school holidays to learn something new and try an activity you have been dreaming of doing.
4. Get a holiday job
Don’t worry too much about how much you’re doing to get paid, take a job for the skills you will learn. The best learning experience might just come in the form of an unpaid job or internship.
5. Read
It can be as simple as that. Read a book that isn’t required. Spend your afternoons relaxing and catching up on great literature.
6. Learn a new skill
You’re going to have a lot of free time during the school holidays, so why not spend it learning a new skill like:
> Public speaking
> Cooking
> Drawing
> Self-defense
7. Volunteer
During this time of the year, there are many organisations that could use an extra pair of hands. Volunteer at your local animal shelter or soup kitchen. There are endless opportunities for getting involved, and your time would be greatly appreciated.
8. Reconnect with friends and family
Use your time to reconnect with friends, or to make new connections. At the very least, send all your close friends and family a message or email to show them that even though you didn’t spend a lot of time together during the school year, you’re still thinking of them.
The school holidays are a great time to take advantage of not having work to do, so you can accomplish other things you may have always wanted to do.
