Once the thrill of the New Year comes to an
end, it’s time to get back to business. Students who are just starting high
school or primary school need to focus as the learning material becomes tougher
and the workload gets heavier.
Here’s a list of the best study habits for
students to make sure the year is a productive one!
Be
organised. It’s easy for things to be forgotten
when there’s so much to remember such as homework, tests and extramural activities.
Make sure to write down all assignments, appointments, etc. in a planner so
items can be reviewed during the day.
Find
a study area. Studying in front of the TV is never
a good idea. Find a quiet, well-lit area where people won’t bother you and put
your phone away until all your studying, homework or assignments are done.
Create
a study plan. Creating a plan means you will have
ample time to prepare yourself before the test or exam. Buy a wall calendar and
assign certain tasks for each day, such as reviewing subjects that you have
trouble with. Remember that setting goals is the key to being successful with
your studies.
Think
positive. Being in the correct mind-set can make
all the difference in the world. Stay positive before a test or exam and keep
any negative statements out of your mind.
Start
a study group. Working in a group can really help
you, especially if you are struggling with something in particular. Keep your
group small and structured so that you can concentrate and not get distracted.
Review
strategies. It’s normal for you to feel stressed
when you take an important test or exam, however there are some helpful strategies
that can help manage the stress. Make sure you arrive on time, read through all
the directions on the paper and pace yourself – always remember that it’s okay
to start with the topics you’re most comfortable with.
Look
towards the future. For some students, going to
university or college may seem like something in the distant future, but it
really isn’t that far off. Start early and you’ll see what a great help it can
be.
Beginning a new school year can be
challenging at first, but getting into good habits from the start can help you
adjust smoothly to new expectations and routines.
