Research and
statistics tell us that if we are involved with our children, they will have
increased success at school and in life.
The real question for
most parents is not whether we should be involved, but how and what matters
most.
There is no single
recipe to make a positive impact on your kid’s lives, but there are consistent
ingredients…
o
Communication – There is no shortcut for proper communication.
Conversations matter, whether they are long or short. Ask questions and then
listen properly, discuss things that matter as well as things that are just
fun! If your child communicates with you, their skills at communicating with
other adults will improve and they will be better at seeking assistance and
asking question.
o
Family Activities and Interests – Whether it’s sports, movies, music or just
playing board games together, being part of a team that will always care about
them and be invested in them matters a lot! Every second you spend together
builds relationships that foster lifelong security and secure kids succeed at a
higher rate.
o
Read for Pleasure and Learning – Having an environment that is full of books is
so important. Make sure there are all kinds available everywhere in your home. Anytime
you read in front of your child is important, whether it is a blog, newspaper,
book or magazine. Be a great role model. Great readers are more successful
academically and socially.
o
Step Outside the Box – No parent has ever said that they want their
child to be like everyone else. Encouraging your child to be themselves and to
try new things is vital. Creative problem solvers succeed in school and life at
a higher rate. Make sure they know that’s its okay to not do what everyone else
does, expressing your support for their exploration of new things really
matters.
o
Join the Team – Your child’s school would love to have you
involved, whether as a part of the PTA or as a classroom volunteer. Letting
both your child and the school know that your are interested in education and
making school a positive experience will impact your child’s success and
confidence.
There is no rule for
exactly what to do in order to make your child more successful in school. But the
ingredients in the recipe are pretty clear – YOU matter and you make the real difference!
